Running for Office

Mayor & 3 City Council Members Election - 2023  The Mayor and six City Council members hold four-year, staggered terms of office. Their terms of office commence on the Monday after the election.

Qualifications - City Charter 10.043: Section 3.3 The mayor and other members of the council shall be elected on a non-partisan ballot from the city-at-large [13]12 and shall be subject to recall as provided by law. No person shall be elected to the office of councilman or mayor who has not attained the age of 25 years and who is not an elector of the city and who has not been a resident of the city for at least two years immediately prior to his election. 

Documents required to file:
Non Partisan nominating Petitions, Affidavit of Identity and Statement of Candidacy (charter Section 10.104) are available in the Clerk's Office.

  • Lake Shore Public Schools – two (2) 6-year terms ending 12/31/2028
  • Lakeview Public Schools     – two (2) 6-year terms ending 12/31/2028
  • South Lake Schools             – two (2) 6-year terms ending 12/31/2028

In 2012, Annual School Board Elections moved to November of even years. The City Clerk is the election coordinator and filing official for the Lakeview, Lake Shore, and South Lake Boards of Education.  

Please note: L’Anse Creuse School Board filing official is the Macomb County Clerk. (St. Clair Shores has a small portion of this district.)
